Big Heavy World (parent organization of the VMLS) has spent many years empowering, promoting and cheerleading Vermont’s musicians, participating in expanding their audiences and the public appreciation of their art. Many of the projects of the organization have been recognized in the press for their practical benefits to Vermont state culture, but the underpinning world view is less obvious: A fundamental institutional value of Big Heavy World is inclusivity, and in all its efforts to preserve and promote Vermont-made music this world view includes and makes welcome every aesthetic within the musical art form. The Vermont Jukebox Project carries forward this ideal by providing an innovative service to music patrons and Vermont-based musicians alike: It brings Vermont-made music to the welcome centers along Vermont's Interstate highway system. The project's intention is to expand the horizon of options for local and traveling music patrons; cultivate public awareness of the value of Vermont-made music; and celebrate the musical arts originating in Vermont.

The project is comprised of hardware that plays Vermont-made music through public address systems in fourteen of twenty statewide welcome centers administrated by the Vermont State Department of Buildings and General Services. It was conceived in part as a cost-effective means of exposing regional musical artists to new audiences of music consumers. The digital nature of the project requires a single CD recording from any artist to initiate their involvement; the music is duplicated in digital format to each jukebox installation. There is no fee to the artists involved, a characteristic of Big Heavy World. The intended infrastructure of the project is inexpensive ‘commodified’ personal computers which are an ideal platform for media playback and interactivity. An interim solution has been distribution of digital music files on recordable DVD’s, performed with consumer grade DVD players connected to stereo systems at each welcome center. This version of the project has exceeded its 4.7GB capacity.

Purchases of Vermont-made music at this storefront — where solely Vermont-made albums are found — contribute to operational support of The Big Heavy World Foundation, Inc, an educational nonprofit organization with a mission of preserving and promoting Vermont-made music. The Vermont Jukebox Project is a collaboration of The Big Heavy World Foundation, Inc. and The Vermont State Department of Buildings and General Services, supported in part by the Vermont Arts Council.

The VT Jukebox Project on WCAX Channel 3. Vermont Artists: Be Involved! Vermont artists who would like to have their music included in the programming of the statewide Vermont Jukebox Project are invited to send SIX copies of your CD to the Vermont Music Library & Shop, P.O. Box 428, Burlington, VT 05402. Five will become inventory in the shop while the sixth 'house copy' is scanned, encoded, and entered into the VMLS library catalog.
